KZN mom breaks silence on son-in-law’s death in R750 loan row
A dispute over a small loan in Shaka’s Head ended in tragedy that will never be forgotten by a six-year-old girl.
A dispute, allegedly over a R750 debt to a loan shark, ended in tragedy when a man was fatally attacked in Shaka’s Head on Saturday evening, allegedly in front of his six-year-old daughter.
The North Coast Courier reports the victim, William Mputhi (33), died after being assaulted with a bladed weapon during an altercation at his home. He was rushed to Tongaat Clinic but died.
Loan dispute sparks deadly confrontation
According to his family, the incident stemmed from a dispute over a small loan taken by a couple renting on the property, for which Mputhi had stood as guarantor. The loan had allegedly been issued by a known moneylender in the area.
Mputhi ’s mother-in-law, Lorraine Dhavasiam, told the Courier that he had earlier been confronted by the lender while walking to a nearby shop. Shaken by the incident, he returned home and confronted the tenant involved.
What followed is still under police investigation, but according to Dhavasiam, a further confrontation escalated later that evening.
Witness describes traumatic scene
William suffered a stab wound to his stomach. Dhavasiam described the scene as ‘traumatic’.
“William’s little daughter came running, screaming that her father was being attacked. When I rushed outside, I saw the man holding the sickle dripping with blood.”
Dhavasiam’s voice broke as she described finding Mputhi lying on the ground.
“He was choking on blood, his legs straight, his head leaning against the fence. His stomach had been cut open and I saw his eyes turning.”
Two suspects arrested
Two suspects – a man and a woman – were arrested by Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) on Monday afternoon after they were found hiding at a residence in Shaka’s Head.
Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said the arrests followed 27 tip-offs. The man resisted arrest and had to be restrained.
Umhlali SAPS is investigating a case of murder. The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
