KZN mother helplessly watches daughter’s rape

A man, 46, was apprehended yesterday by members of the Madlala community in KwaZulu-Natal after he allegedly broke into a house in the area and raped a 19-year-old girl as her mother and young sisters watched helplessly.

It is alleged the mother, 46, and her daughters aged 19, 15 and 9, respectively, were asleep at their home in Mvozane Ward, Madlala, Southport, when the suspect gained entry. He threatened the occupants with a knife and demanded cash and cellphones, South Coast Herald reported.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the woman handed over a sum of money to the suspect, but the man demanded more. He also took their cellphones.

The man then proceeded to rape the 19-year-old, forcing her mother and one of her sisters to watch.

“He also took more money from the woman. The other daughter, who had managed to hold on to her cellphone, hid under a blanket and managed to send a message for help,” Wiid added.

Wiid said it was later established the suspect had been out on parole, which expired on August 16. While on parole, he is suspected of attempting to break in to another house in the Southport area. It is also believed the suspect could be linked to other outstanding cases.

He will appear in Port Shepstone Magistrates’ Court on Friday facing charges of house robbery, rape and compelling a person to witness a sexual offence being committed.

Port Shepstone cluster commander, Major-General Thembi Ndlovu, expressed her gratitude towards the community, who arrested the man, and also commended the brave girl who managed to alert the community while her life was also in danger.

Last month, A 50-year-old woman and her three daughters were allegedly gang raped in Jouberton near Klerksdorp, North West.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said it is alleged the woman was asleep with her children at their Extension 14 home when she heard someone kicking the door. She woke up and saw three unknown males inside her bedroom. The suspects allegedly switched on the light and she managed to see that they were armed with knives.

According to Mokgwabone, they suspects allegedly ordered her to undress and took her to the sitting room where one of them raped her. She was then taken to the bedroom where she was allegedly gang raped together with her three daughters, aged between 6 and 18, in the presence of her two sons who were threatened with knives.
