Limpopo mother of 7 arrested for concealing birth, burying stillborn behind house
An investigation has been launched after the remains of a foetus were recovered in a shallow grave.
A 43-year-old woman from Lesodimotlana village in the Tinmyne policing area, in the Waterberg District in Limpopo, is expected to appear in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing a charge of concealment of birth.
The Witness reports that the woman, a mother of seven, including a 17-month-old baby, was arrested yesterday, after police received a community tip-off.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says residents became suspicious when they noticed that the woman, who had been visibly pregnant, no longer showed signs of pregnancy.
“One of the community members discovered that the suspect’s pregnancy was no longer visible and notified the police,” says Ledwaba.
When officers questioned her, she disclosed that she had given birth to a stillborn foetus on August 22. She allegedly wrapped the foetus in a towel and buried it behind her house.
Ledwaba confirmed that police recovered the remains.
“The foetus was found in a shallow grave behind the house,” he says.
The matter remains under investigation.
