KZN teen girl under assessment after ‘stabbing’ gran
A 19-year-old Mount Royal girl is undergoing mental evaluation after allegedly stabbing her grandmother in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal.
Neighbours of the family told police they saw the girl, believed to be mentally ill, carrying a knife in her hand after arriving home last week, Phoenix Sun reported.
They said they then saw the girl exit the house with her hands and clothes covered in blood after allegedly stabbing her 63-year-old grandmother in her bed.
The neighbours were believed to have contacted emergency services, who found the girl’s grandmother lying in her bed in a pool of blood.
The old woman was said to have been in critical condition and could not tell her rescuers exactly what had happened. The victim was transported to hospital, where she remains.
Phoenix Police Station commander Brigadier Phumelele Makoba said: “The girl was arrested on the scene, and a case of attempted murder is currently being investigated”.
Police said the teen was taken to Fort Napier for mental evaluation.
This after a Hoërskool Florida pupil allegedly murdered his grandmother with a sword in December.
Roodepoort police arrested the boy at his friend’s house on Nelson Street in Georginia after the incident, Roodepoort Record reported.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Khumalo told The Citizen the boy had been arrested and charged with murder.
She added the boy was taken to the Bosasa Youth Development Centre in Mogale City, where child offenders are kept and treated.
