Lawyer arrested after clocking 222km/h on N2 in KZN
A lawyer and auditor were among speedsters arrested near Park Rynie, with one caught driving at 222km/h in a Mercedes-Benz.
Two well-known professionals — a lawyer and an auditor — found themselves behind bars over the weekend after being caught driving at dangerous speeds along the N2 near Park Rynie on the KZN South Coast.
According to The Witness, provincial Transport MEC Sipho Duma has applauded the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team in Park Rynie for their vigilance, saying their work reflects the province’s “Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense” and “Alufakwa” campaigns.
“I have mandated our highly efficient and dedicated team to sustain this campaign on our roads. We commend the Park Rynie RTI team for their outstanding commitment to ensuring road safety this weekend.”
Among those arrested was a lawyer from Mthatha, who was apprehended for clocking a staggering 222km/h in a 120km/h zone in a Mercedes-Benz.
The RTI team had to give chase after he failed to stop when signalled.
He was eventually caught and taken to Scottburgh Police Station, where bail was set at R3 000.
In a separate incident, a Reservoir Hills-based auditor was arrested after reaching 177km/h in his Hyundai iMv.
He was also processed at Scottburgh Police Station and granted R1 500 bail.
A third motorist was caught driving at 178km/h, and a pursuit led to his arrest.
He remains in holding cells, awaiting bail.
“These arrests send a clear message: No one is above the law,” said Duma. “It is particularly disappointing when professionals — people who should know better — put lives at risk.”
Duma added that the department is acutely aware of the long-term trauma and socio-economic devastation caused by road crashes.
“In our interaction with families of victims, we hear painful stories of job losses, disability, and homes torn apart. Reckless drivers fuel this vicious cycle,” he said.
The MEC reaffirmed the department’s commitment to ensuring road safety and holding speedsters accountable.
