Lesufi warns bully gang at Vereeniging school: ‘I am in charge’

The MEC visited General Smuts High School after reports of bullying of learners and alleged attacks on teachers and a parent.

The Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi says that he is not impressed with what is happening at General Smuts High School in Vereeniging and warned that he will not tolerate the wrongdoings at the school.

“I am in charge, and those who don’t want to hold hands must leave the school in peace and harmony. You are on the doorstep of success and we value your education,” Lesufi says.

He addressed Grade 12 learners before they attended classes on Friday.

Lesufi suspended classes at the school for two days last week, after reports that learners were engaging in bullying. It is alleged that even teachers and a parent have been attacked recently.

The decision to suspend classes and Lesufi’s visit was motivated by incidents of class disruptions and bullying, allegedly by about 30 learners belonging to a gang who call themselves ‘SA Mob’.

He told the principal and school management that he is giving them a last chance to lead the school. If they were incapable of doing so, he warned that he lead on their behalf.

Lesuifi appealed to everyone to take hands to make the school a safe place for learning.
