Lions on the loose at Ngwenya Lodge

Veterinary services are assisted by the SANParks helicopter to guide the lions back into the Kruger National Park.

The SANParks helicopter and veterinary team are currently working to drive a pride of lions from Ngwenya Lodge back into Kruger National Park (KNP).

SANParks has informed the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, which is responsible for wild animals once they leave KNP.

Hayley Dahl reported on Facebook that she saw the pride of lions at Hippo Pools last night, crossing the river towards Ngwenya Lodge. She also mentioned seeing a few subadult cubs in the pride. Other social media users noted hearing the helicopter.

This follows a recent incident where six elephants escaped Kruger Park near Hazyview, and local community members attempted to prevent SANParks from returning them to the park.

At the time, SANParks spokesperson Ike Phaahla stated that it is normal for animals to cross the boundary river and leave the park during winter when water levels are low.
