Listen: World Rugby, Saru investigating racial slur claims

England flanker Tom Curry has accused South African hooker Bongi Mbonambi of using a racial slur against him.

The only specialist hooker in the Springboks squad, Mbongeni Theo Mbonambi (known as ‘Bongi’), is under investigation by rugby union governing body World Rugby, as well as the South African Rugby Union (Saru).

Mbonambi, who has captained the men in green in gold when regular captain Siya Kolisi has been off the field, reportedly referred to England flanker Tom Curry as a ‘white c***’ during the 2023 Rugby World Cup semi-final match between England and South Africa in Paris on Saturday.

Curry informed referee Ben O’Keeffe of the alleged incident and asked what he should do. O’Keeffe, according to an audio clip published by The Telegraph, responded: “Nothing … I’ll be on it.”

When asked for comment, Saru told Caxton Local Media: “We are aware of the allegation, which we take very seriously, and are reviewing the available evidence. We will engage with Bongi if anything is found to substantiate the claim.”

World Rugby earlier today confirmed they too are investigating the claim.

“We can confirm that we are formally reviewing the allegation made by England’s Tom Curry in relation to the use of discriminatory language during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final on Saturday.

“World Rugby will not be making further comment until the conclusion of the process,” the statement reads.

Sky Sports reports that: “If World Rugby’s inquiry triggers disciplinary proceedings, they are likely to fall under the banner of ‘bringing the game into disrepute’, which can result in a range of sanctions, including a suspension and/or a fine.”

It is unclear when the investigation will be concluded, and what impact it might have on the Springboks’ line-up for the final on Saturday.
