Looting leads to fatal shooting in Ekurhuleni

Police are calling for calm in the community and urging the public to co-operate with law enforcement following a shooting.

A 20-year-old man was shot dead in Zalelisa in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday.

According to Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, initial reports suggest the incident occurred during the looting of a foreign national-owned spaza shop.

Boksburg Advertiser reports that the victim was fatally shot during the chaos. It is further alleged that community members apprehended one of the foreign nationals and assaulted him with stones.

The injured man was later transported to a local clinic for medical treatment.

A case of murder has been opened for further investigation and no one has been arrested.

“We urge the community to come forward with any information that could aid the investigation.

“Reports can be made at the local police station, via the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111, or on the MySAPS app, which is available for download on smartphones. All information will be treated with strict confidentiality, ” says Nevhuhulwi.

He says the Public Order Policing unit is monitoring the area, which remains calm following the incident. Police are also working to maintain order and prevent any further escalations.

“Community members are encouraged to co-operate with law enforcement to ensure justice is served and to help prevent similar incidents in the future.”
