Malmesbury teen in court on 11 charges after international probe
A 16-year-old Western Cape boy faces charges of sexual assault, child pornography offences and animal cruelty following an international investigation.
A teenager arrested in connection with alleged child sexual abuse material offences appeared in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court today (August 18).
The 16-year-old, who was arrested yesterday in Malmesbury in the Western Cape, is facing 11 charges.
Western Cape NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the charges include seven counts of sexual assault, including compelled self-sexual assault and sexual exploitation of children.
The teenager is also facing charges of exposure or displaying pornography to a child by image, unlawful and intentional distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography.
In addition, he is facing charges of cruelty to animals and allegedly sending a data message threatening people with damage to property or violence.
International investigation leads to arrest
Caxton Network News reported that the teenager was arrested after an investigation by the SAPS National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations team, with support from several SAPS units and US law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said intelligence indicated that an individual linked to the violent online network known as ‘764’ was in South Africa, leading to his arrest.
The network is associated with child exploitation and reportedly targets and coerces minors into online sexual abuse, animal cruelty and other violent criminal activities.
Ntabazalila said the case was postponed to Thursday (August 20) for the outcome of an assessment by a district surgeon.
