Man charged after shooting at police
A man accused of firing multiple shots at Laudium police appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Police spokesperson Captain Louise Steynberg said the man was arrested at about 7pm on Friday night in Laudium, in the west of Pretoria. He was charged with attempted murder and driving under the influence of alcohol, Rekord Centurion reported.
“Police received a tip-off about an armed man driving in a silver BMW. Two patrol vehicles saw the parked BWM on 3rd Avenue and moved closer,” Steynberg said.
“When one of the police officer approached the vehicle on foot, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and tried to run the officer over.”
The car reversed all the way down the street in an attempt to get away. The driver fired shots at the police, who then retaliated.
“The police also opened fire when the driver suddenly put his vehicle in gear and fled. Moments later the driver returned to the scene and rammed into one of the police vehicles. He then drove into a ditch where police arrested him,” she said.
Steynberg said the police found a holster on his hip but no weapon. Police suspect he dumped the firearm when he fled the scene the first time.
She said police suspected the man was from Limpopo because the car had number plates from that province. No one was injured.
