Man lying on Centurion highway for ‘entire day’ rescued

Paramedics had to bring traffic to a standstill to get to the man safely.

A man had been lying on the N1 for almost an entire day before he was helped by paramedics.

He was laying under the centre median barrier between Botha Road and the R21, according to emergency services Cert-SA spokesperson Ruan Heyns.

“A woman called in and reported that she had driven past the man earlier in the day and again later in the evening,” said Heyns.

The man was only rescued on Tuesday evening at around 18:00.

Heyns said paramedics had to block the traffic to get to the man safely.

“He wasn’t injured at all. He appeared to be too weak and couldn’t cross the road any further.

“He seemed to be homeless, so we suspect that he didn’t have much to eat and suffered from weakness,” he said.

“The man was transported to a nearby hospital in a Gauteng emergency services ambulance.”

Heyns thanked the provincial service for its support as well as the motorist for reporting what she had observed.
