The Durban Regional Court has sentenced a 20-year-old man to 30 years’ imprisonment for murder and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Siyabonga Xulu stabbed a woman at SJ Smith HOSTEL on December 13, 2014, at about 2.30pm,Southlands Sun reported.

The woman died on the scene as a result of her injuries. Xulu also stole two cellphones from the scene, said investigating officer Warrant Officer Rico Naidoo.

Naidoo said the following day, one of the stolen cellphones was recovered in Fuyeni, in Empangeni.

Xulu appeared in court and pleaded guilty to murder on Thursday, March 5.

Last month, a man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a friend to death in Kagiso, near Krugersdorp.

“The suspect had visited the deceased’s place in Kagiso 1 in December 2014, where they enjoyed drinks together. While drinking and enjoying music, an argument ensued over the type of music his friend was playing,” police spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.

The man left after another friend who was with them managed to calm them down.

“Later, their friend, who was a few metres away, heard the deceased screaming for help and calling his name. He noticed the suspect leaving the deceased’s shack, and [that he had] a sharp object in his hand,” added Sibiya.

He found the man lying on the floor and bleeding from stab wounds to the upper body. He died on arrival in hospital.
