Man smuggles 17 sheep in a taxi

A man was arrested after police tracked down 17 stolen sheep and found them in a taxi.

A 48-year-old man was arrested in Magaliesburg on Monday after being caught with stolen livestock inside a taxi.

Magaliesburg police spokesperson Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere explained that the arrest was made by Sergeant Kallie Luus from the Magaliesburg Police’s Rural Safety unit and Nicolaas Jacobs, a member of the Stock Theft Information Centre (STIC).

Mogwere said they received a complaint about livestock that had been stolen from a farm in Kaalfontein, Magaliesburg. Luus mobilised the stock theft unit and a search was conducted on Carletonville Road and neighbouring farms.

They then spotted a white Inyathi taxi in the middle of the forest and found 17 sheep inside. The suspect was arrested.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the same taxi was linked to other cases of stock theft in Rustenburg and Klerksdorp respectively. Investigations are continuing.”

Magaliesburg Police station commander, Colonel Mawewe Vuma applauded the joint effort.
