Man steals beer from police station

Police arrested a 24-year-old man who was caught stealing seized alcohol from the Reiger Park Police Station on the East Rand.

Described as a “daring, shameless thief”, police said the man carried two crates full of beer from a storeroom at the police station, Boksburg Advertiser reported.

Reiger Park police spokesperson Sergeant Mashudu Phathela confirmed the incident took place on Sunday at about 4am.

Two more crates full of beer, which had been taken from the storeroom, were later found in the field outside the station.

The thief allegedly cut a hole through the outside fence to enter the premises before jumping the wall to gain access to the storeroom.

The man was charged with theft and faces additional charges, including malicious damage to property, business burglary and trespassing.

Phathela said investigators were trying to determine if the suspect was linked to two previous cases of burglaries, where computers were stolen from the police station.

“We believe that the suspect was among a gang of thieves during the recent theft. They are pushing their luck by continuing to target the station,” said Phathela.

Last week, a 31-year-old man, who was with his friend at the time, was shot in the neck and died on the scene when six men entered his home and demanded beer in eSikhawini near Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police said a television set, two cellphones, cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash were stolen from the house.

Cases of armed robbery and murder were being investigated.
