Man wanted for 2013 Sebokeng hostel rape surrenders to police

An Eastern Cape tracking operation ends as a wanted man hands himself over following public appeal

A decade-long police search has ended after a man wanted in connection with a rape case dating back to 2013 handed himself over to police, days after detectives appealed to the public for help in finding him.

On Friday (August 14), police appealed for information about the whereabouts of the man, who was wanted in connection with a rape case reported at KwaMasiza Hostel in Sebokeng, reports Sedibeng Ster.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela, the alleged rape took place at the hostel, where the man and other individuals were allegedly involved.

“The matter was reported to the police and registered at Sebokeng SAPS,” Maxambela said.

She said the investigation had continued over the years, with detectives working to trace the suspect.

Police had received information that he could be in the Eastern Cape and appealed to anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.

The appeal appears to have paid off. The man subsequently handed himself over to local police, bringing the search for him to an end.

Maxambela had not yet disclosed the circumstances surrounding his surrender or the next steps in the investigation.

The investigation into the 2013 rape case is continuing.
