Manhunt launched for escaped awaiting-trial prisoner in Lephalale

Zimbabwean national Anthony Makhusha is said to have escaped on the same day he was arrested for fraud.

A manhunt has been launched by the police in Lephalale, Limpopo, for a 32-year-old awaiting trial prisoner who escaped from lawful custody at the Lephalale Police Station.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect, identified as Zimbabwean national Anthony Makhusha, was arrested on Tuesday for fraud and was in the Community Service Centre around 13:00 when he escaped.

“The circumstances surrounding the escape will form part of an investigation. A case of escaping from lawful custody has also been opened,” his statement reads.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, has urged the public to assist police with information regarding Makhusha’s whereabouts and not to attempt to apprehend him.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact the detectives commander, Lieutenant Colonel Johannes Hlongwane on 082 565 7968, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.”
