Man’s bound body found in Mbombela river
Police are investigating after a body, with arms and legs tied and a plastic bag over the head, was retrieved from a river.
A man’s body was found floating in the Crocodile River near Mataffin in Mpumalanga yesterday afternoon.
His arms and legs were bound and a plastic bag was placed over his head.
The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit recovered the body, which had become stuck on sticks and reeds in the river.
The unit’s Captain Pottie Potgieter estimates that the body had been in the river for about 10 days.
Emer-G-Med’s Martin Jeffrey says he was alerted to the discovery at about 17:00 by a member of Nelspruit Concerned Citizens. Other relevant authorities were immediately alerted.
He says the body shows signs of severe decomposition.
The scene was handed over to the Nelspruit police just after 19:00 for investigation.
The man’s age and identity is unknown.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala says an investigation has been launched, and he will provide further information once it becomes available.
