May Day! Petrol to cost R25.49 per litre from midnight

While petrol consumers will be forking out more from midnight, diesel consumers have some relief.

Fuel prices will be adjusted at midnight, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, announced yesterday.

The price of 93 and 95 fuel will increase by 37c per litre, while diesel prices will decrease by 30c per litre and 36c per litre for 0.05% sulphur and 0.005% sulphur, respectively.

The minister said that the average Brent crude oil price increased from $84.22 to $88.10 per barrel in the period under review.

“There was a lot of volatility in the market during this period. The main contributing factor is the growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and sustained production cuts by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

“The average international product prices of petrol increased following the higher Brent crude oil prices and anticipated demand for the driving season during the period under review.”

The increase means that 95 unleaded petrol will cost R25.49 inland and R24.70 at the coast.

Paraffin and gas prices decrease

The minister said diesel, illuminating paraffin and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices decreased on average due to seasonal changes and reduced demand in the Northern Hemisphere as it moves away from its winter season.

As such, illuminating paraffin prices will decrease by 19c per litre, and LPG prices by 46c/kg from tomorrow.
