Middelburg police probe gruesome death linked to dog mauling after crash

A man’s mutilated body was found in a Middelburg field, with police suspecting he was mauled to death after an earlier accident.

The mutilated body of a man was found in a field near the corner of Walter Sisulu and Protea streets in Middelburg.

According to Middelburg Observer, the deceased had multiple open wounds on his legs, exposing bone.

The body was discovered around 13:30 yesterday.

Police found an aggressive dog at the scene, and the SPCA had to be called.

Police suspect the man may have been mauled to death after being injured in an earlier accident.

Bite marks were visible around gaping wounds on his legs, where chunks of flesh were missing.

The victim was neatly dressed in blue shorts and a striped shirt and was wearing black ankle-high sneakers.

He had visible injuries to his face and head and was found with a long stick on his chest.

Up to three dogs may have been involved in the attack.

According to a reliable source, the man was involved in a road accident with a Bantam bakkie around 05:00.

Police and emergency services responded, and the victim was taken to hospital, where he received stitches to his head.

It is suspected he left the hospital and walked back to where his body was later discovered.

A post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death.
