Missing cyclist found after two nights in Knysna forest

He was supposed to arrive in Plettenberg Bay at 14:00 on Saturday and was found near the Bitou River on Monday.

Alan Broderick, who had been missing for two days after going for a cycle in the Knysna forest on Saturday 3 December, has been found by rescuers and is currently receiving medical attention.

Broderick was reported missing after his wife, Gail, dropped him off at the Diepwalle hut and his planned cycle route was through the forest back to Plettenberg Bay on N2 via the Petrus se Brand area. Broderick was reportedly expected back around 14:00 in Plettenberg Bay.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed that 58-year-old Broderick was found by search and rescue teams yesterday afternoon.

Volunteers have been helping and walking all the cycling paths in search of Broderick. The Petrus Se brand trail has been combed from every angle.

“The search and rescue operation with the deployment of air support led to the discovery of [Alan Broderick] in the forest near the Bitou River at about 16:00 yesterday,” he said.

“The crew noticed activity in the vicinity and a search in the area led to the discovery.”

This brings to an end two days of search and rescue efforts, and Gail Broderick has indicated that the family is overjoyed about the good news.

“He was airlifted and taken to a medical facility for further medical care,” Spies said.
