Missing Sodwana Bay skipper case: Suspect reportedly ‘on the run’

The public is urged to report sightings of Tomas Frederik ‘Ferdie’ Visser who has reportedly escaped from prison.

The man who allegedly last saw missing Sodwana Bay skipper John ‘Matambu’ Dercksen alive and is suspected to be involved in his disappearance, has reportedly escaped from custody in Mpumalanga.

The family of Dercksen received information that Tomas Frederik ‘Ferdie’ Visser is reported to have escaped from prison while carrying out community service.

Derksen’s family has appealed to the public to help search for him and report sightings.

“This development is absolutely gut-wrenching for us and will incense the fishing community.

“But Visser is a marked man and, with no access to funds, clothing or transport, he can’t be on the run for long,” Cherie Eilertsen, Dercksen’s sister, told Zululand Observer today.

Eilertsen appeals to members of the community to once again come to their aid in reporting any sightings of Visser.

He may have illegally crossed the border into Swaziland or Zimbabwe,” said Eilertsen.

“Even if you have only 100 Facebook friends, one of those people may spot him.”

A memorial service will be held for Dercksen at 11:00 on November 10 at the Sodwana Bay Ski-boat Club.
