Most of Lonehill Shopping Centre reopens after fire
Three-quarters of Lonehill Shopping Centre has reopened after a kitchen fire at The Braai Room, which remains partly closed for clean-up operations.
About three-quarters of Lonehill Shopping Centre in northern Johannesburg was operational again on Sunday afternoon (October 25) after a fire broke out in the kitchen of The Braai Room.
Robert Mulaudzi, City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) media liaison, confirmed that the fire started at about 08:30 and was extinguished by 09:30.
No injuries were reported, reports the Fourways Review.
According to Mulaudzi, emergency services contained the fire before it could spread beyond the kitchen.
Emergency personnel also opened the building’s roof ventilator to release smoke and heat.
The left entrance to The Braai Room remained closed while clean-up operations continued.
Ward 94 councillor David Foley, who witnessed the incident, told Fourways Review that people inside the shopping centre were evacuated as a safety precaution while emergency services responded.
Foley said he noticed smoke while filling potholes at Lone Close and Lonehill Boulevard, a road leading into the shopping centre.
Fourways Review attempted to contact The Braai Room for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
