Mother and daughter murdered: Man appears in Mpumalanga court

A man has been remanded in custody in connection with the murder of a mother and daughter who were found lying in a pool of blood.

Thulani ‘Mathousand’ Sikhundla (40) appeared in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court in Matsulu in Mpumalanga yesterday, facing two murder charges.

He is accused of murdering a woman (40) and her daughter (23) in Matsulu on April 2.

Sikhundla was arrested on Monday in Barberton after the Mpumalanga SAPS launched a manhunt for him as a suspect in the murders.

The case was postponed to April 17 and he remains in custody.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the police believed the murders were committed by someone close to the family.

“According to information, the accused is said to have visited the family that night at 21:00, while they [were watching] TV. The woman’s son went to sleep earlier, leaving the man in question with other family members… The son [woke up] when his mother screamed for help and he [allegedly] saw a suspect holding a knife in his hand. The son ran out to call for help from the neighbours,” says Mdhluli.

He says the man escaped through a window.

“The mother and her daughter were found lying in a pool of blood, with multiple stab wounds. They were certified dead by medical personnel.”
