Mother tells of daughter’s kidnapping ordeal

Catherine Verwey, mother of the missing woman who was found on Monday has detailed her daughter’s kidnapping ordeal.

29-year-old Impala Park resident Margaretha Johanna Compaan, went missing in the early hours of July 19. She was found in a veld in Boksburg, on the East Rand at about 1pm, on Monday, Boksburg Advertiser reported.

She told authorities the last thing she remembered was going to the bathroom at Presleys nightclub and was surprised to wake up in a strange little room.

Her mother, Catherine Verwey, who was relieved at finding her daughter, said her child was found in a very bad state.

“She was drugged, and she had bruises, cuts, marks and a swollen face, which clearly indicates that she has been assaulted,” said Verwey.

Verwey said Compaan escaped from that room through the window and ran to the nearest property.

“After knocking at the gate without finding help, she ran and hid in the veld nearby, where she was found, and the police were called,” she said.

Compaan has undergone testing to determine if sexual assault had taken place. She expects the know the results by tomorrow.

The family has opened a case of kidnapping with the Boksburg North police and remain hopeful the perpetrator will be brought to book.

In a separate incident, a Durban North resident in KwaZulu-Natal was allegedly drugged, kidnappedand sexually assaulted by an unknown man in May.

Hayley, who wished to only give her first name, said she has been left shattered, shamed and disempowered after her drink was allegedly spiked by an unknown man at a bar with a date-rape drug known as Rohypnol.

The perpetrator took Hayley to an uMhlanga flat, where he allegedly raped her. The victim woke up the next morning, naked and covered in bruises, with no memory of the events leading up to where she was.

Her traumatic ordeal has also inspired her to begin a support group, which she hopes would give date rape victims a platform to share their stories.
