Behind the identified victims of the Ekurhuleni murders are mothers, breadwinners and women who worked to build a better future for their children. 

Today, their families are left grappling with devastating loss as police investigate the killings, with the number of discovered bodies now standing at nine. 

Runner Elizabeth ‘Tsontso’ Moselakgomo (38) was a single mother who worked as a centre manager at a mall.  
 
She was reported missing after she failed to return home on September 9. Her body was found in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, on September 12, and identified by family at a state mortuary on Monday (September 14).  

Her uncle, Andries Matlaila, described her as ‘humble and an introvert’.  
 
“She loved running and participated in numerous competitions. She was a member of the Zion Christian Church. Elizabeth was the breadwinner for her family. She cared deeply for her daughter and they shared a close bond.” 
 
Matlaila said their family was still in a state of shock.  
 
“We are rallying together to support her daughter. We are praying for justice.”  
 
Her funeral is expected to take place on Sunday. 

Mother of one, Itumeleng Kekana (32) was a self-employed tailor who had dreams of expanding her fashion business.  

She also ran a tuckshop. 

She was reported missing on July 17 and her body was found on Great North Road in Pomona, Kempton Park, on August 3.  

Through investigations, police have linked her case to the series of murders. 

Thabo Motlalane, the family spokesperson, said her death has left a void in their lives.  
 
“Itumeleng was a simple and humble person. She worked as a tailor and did her best to provide for her 14-year-old daughter. The day she went missing, she told her friend she was going to be back soon but never returned. The community worked together to search for her. When her body was found, it was just heartbreaking.” 
 
Motlalane said her daughter was not coping.  
 
“It has been difficult for her.” 

The third victim was identified as Dineo Evelyn Motapane (38). Her body was discovered on the side of the road in KwaThema, Springs, on Tuesday (September 15) and identified by family at the Springs Mortuary yesterday.  
 
Last night, authorities identified a fourth victim as Gracious Nkomo (28). Her body was discovered partially clothed on September 10 near Voortrekker Road, at the R21 highway crossing. 
 
Five victims remain unidentified.  
 
Kempton Express reported that police have deployed more officers to affected areas, with increased patrols, visibility and intelligence-led operations underway.
