An investigation is underway after a municipal lifeguard (39) from Middelburg drowned while rescuing a teenager at a public pool.

A lifeguard from Middelburg drowned yesterday after rescuing a teenage boy (15) from drowning in a municipal pool.

According to a press release by Sibusiso Chaucke, the acting spokesperson of the municipality, the incident took place at the Kees Taljaard swimming pool.

“The municipality experienced a grave loss when one of its municipal lifeguards, Freddy Msiza (39), who worked for the Physical and Development Department, lost his life in a drowning incident,” the statement reads.

According to Middelburg Observer, the child he saved was taken to the Middelburg Hospital by ambulance.

“We understand the shock and tragedy of the Msizas sudden loss, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” the acting Municipal Manager Dr Elizabeth Shabalala said.

The pool is temporarily closed and will reopen on Monday.

“As many residents will be taking time to relax at our swimming pools, they are urged to be more cautious and adhere to all safety measures and tips provided on all notice boards,” the statement reads.

Details of the incident are under investigation.
