Mpumalanga traffic cop dies after taxi hits him on N2

Police are investigating a culpable homicide after an eMkhondo traffic officer was struck and killed while operating a speed trap.

An eMkhondo traffic officer died after being struck by a taxi he was attempting to stop yesterday morning.

Mpumalanga News reports Jabulani Collen Ndlovu (46) was operating a speed trap along the N2 between Ermelo and Piet Retief when the taxi hit him.

“Ndlovu was rushed to a hospital in eMkhondo [formerly Piet Retief] where he later died due to his injuries,” says Moeti Mmusi, the spokesperson for the provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

He adds that the taxi was travelling from Ermelo to eMkhondo at the time of the incident.

“The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide,” says Mmusi. He, however, could not confirm whether the taxi driver had been arrested.

Meanwhile, MEC Jackie Macie extended his condolences to Ndlovu’s family, friends, and colleagues. He urged other traffic officers not to be discouraged by the tragedy but to continue performing their duties.

“While pursuing errant drivers, we want our traffic officers to be safe. They must be vigilant and protect each other when on the road. On the other hand, motorists should comply with directives given to them by law enforcement,” Macie concludes.
