Murder of Limpopo cop’s wife, domestic worker: Sergeant arrested
A sergeant, who was on the run following a shooting incident, was wounded during a shoot-out with the police last night.
A 44-year-old Limpopo police sergeant faces two counts of murder after his wife and domestic worker were shot, allegedly by him, at their home in the Vhembe District.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the sergeant was on the run and was arrested following a shoot-out with police last night.
“The suspect was located in the Makuya policing area after a well co-ordinated operation by the Vhembe SAPS District Task Team. He was spotted driving at a high speed along the Tshitavha Road next to the Sambandou bridge,” Ledwaba explains.
The suspect reportedly fired multiple shots at the officers after they attempted to stop his vehicle, prompting a swift response from the team.
“The suspect was wounded in the exchange and a police officer sustained minor injuries. The police recovered a service pistol and ammunition. The suspect and the injured officer were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment,” Ledwaba confirms.
An additional attempted murder charge will be added as a result of the shooting of the officer.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been notified for further handling of the case following the shooting ordeal.
The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the rapid response of members in Vhembe.
“We wish the injured member a speedy recovery and assure the public that the suspect will face the full consequences of his actions, particularly for his refusal to surrender and the violence he displayed towards our officers. This case will be monitored closely to ensure justice is served,” she adds.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Masisi Magistrate’s Court soon.
