Mystery surrounds murder of Durban woman found in her car

Emergency services found Nirvana Baldoo slumped over her steering wheel with a gunshot wound.

The murder of a Southgate woman, who was shot in her VW Polo in KwaMashu last Friday has left police with a lot of unanswered questions.

Nirvana Baldoo (42) was found dead inside her vehicle at the intersection of Dumisani Makhaye and Avoca Hills Drive.

Emer-G-Med paramedics were among the first to respond to the scene.

According to paramedics, they found a stationary orange Volkswagen Polo at the intersection with a bullet hole in the passenger window. Baldoo was found slumped over the steering wheel.

“With the assistance and permission of SAPS, the team used specialist rescue tools to gain access to the vehicle. The driver was assessed and found to have sustained a fatal gunshot wound. She was declared dead at the scene,” Emer-G-Med says.

Provincial police spokeswoman, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, says that the victim was driving along Dumisani Makhaye Drive and came to an intersection.

“An unknown man in a grey vehicle got out of his car and opened fire on the victim.”

Gwala says a case of murder was opened and is currently under investigation at KwaMashu SAPS.

Baldoo was laid to rest at the Verulam Crematorium on Tuesday.

She is survived by her two children, Yashteel and Yastika. Her late husband, Praneal Naidoo, died a couple months ago after suffering from Covid-19.
