Newborn found dead in pit toilet in KZN settlement

A teenage girl and her mother were arrested after a newborn baby was found dead in a pit toilet.

A newborn baby was found dead in a pit latrine yesterday in Maphumulo, about 40km from Stanger in KZN.

It is believed a 16-year-old girl concealed her pregnancy and disposed of the newborn in an abandoned 2m-deep pit latrine located in her neighbour’s yard.

The infant was reportedly placed in a plastic bag before being dropped down the latrine.

IPSS Search and Rescue, in collaboration with Umhlali SAPS K9 Search and Rescue, retrieved the bag containing the infant’s lifeless body.

Maphumulo police arrested the girl and her mother.
