No money seized in Sharpeville double ATM bombing

Two machines were bombed in the same street of the southern Gauteng township, but robbers got away empty handed.

The community of Sharpeville, a township between Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging, woke up to scenes of two bombed ATMS yesterday morning. The incident in Seeiso Street happened in the early hours.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirmed the incident, adding that the Sharpeville police received a complaint regarding an ATM bombing at around 01:20, and subsequently rushed to the scene.

“On arrival on the scene, our members found ADT Security on the scene. The security pointed out two ATMs that had been bombed. Our members were also shown by the security that no money was seized during the bombing.”

Funda says police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property and contravention of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956.
