No more swipe payments at N4 toll gates from December – operator

Planning a trip on the N4? Important toll payment changes are coming this December, so be prepared before your holiday travels.

The festive season is upon us, and many are planning to rejuvenate for 2025. As families and friends from across the country will be travelling to various destinations via the N4, an important notice has been issued regarding toll gates on this route.

Trans African Concessions (Trac) has announced that it is phasing out magstripe card payments as of December 1.

Trac manages the N4 toll route, which runs from the Solomon Mahlangu off-ramp in Tshwane, Gauteng, to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.

According to Trac, toll plazas on the N4 will no longer accept magstripe (swipe) card payments from next month.

They advise motorists of the following options for toll payments:

  • Contactless-enabled debit/credit cards (EMV) – EMV stands for Europay, Visa, and Mastercard, which are the companies that led the development and adoption of this chip technology. In lay terms, ‘tap and pay’.
  • Smart devices (smartphones, smartwatches) linked to contactless payment apps (eg Apple Pay, Samsung Pay).
  • TRAC tags for fast, convenient toll access.
  • Or cash
