Off-duty officer kills hijacking suspect
A hijacking suspect was shot and killed after he and two other accomplices attempted to hijack a Hawks officer and his wife in Isipingo, south of Durban.
It is believed the couple were on their way home recently after spending some time at the mall,Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.
While waiting for the gate to their home to open, three men in a Toyota Yaris pulled up behind them.
Isipingo police spokesperson Captain David Ragavan said two armed men exited the vehicle and forced the officer out of his car while the third suspect shoved his wife out of the passenger seat.
The officer took immediate action and shot one suspect in the chest.
Without hesitation, he fired a shot at the other suspect, who held his wife.
The driver of the Yaris vehicle immediately sped off, while the uninjured suspect fled on foot.
Police said the injured suspect tried to escape. The man, however, collapsed and died further down the road as a result of injuries sustained.
A case of attempted hijacking and an inquest docket were opened at the Isipingo Police Station for further investigation.
“Criminals do not realise that people are sick and tired of becoming victims, and so every measure is taken to protect themselves and their loved ones even if it means arming themselves,” said Ragavan.
In November, a notorious hijacker was shot dead by a motorist who witnessed the man allegedly hijacking another driver in Alexandra, Johannesburg.
Alexandra police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said two suspects, one armed with a firearm, approached a Polo Vivo driver at a traffic light during peak hour morning traffic and ordered the driver out of the car.
One of the men then jumped into the driver’s seat while the other tried to jump into the passenger side.
Another motorist, who had witnessed the hijacking, reportedly got out of his car and shouted at the suspects to stop.
Maphakela said the armed suspect then turned to aim his firearm at the shouting motorist, who then fired a shot, hitting the suspect’s upper body from behind.
The suspects then managed to flee the scene and police who were patrolling the area were alerted and gave chase.
The armed suspect fled on foot, but collapsed a few metres from the scene.
He was declared dead by paramedics, who were called to the scene, while police recovered a fully loaded revolver.
