A police officer was shot while responding to a robbery in eMalahleni, prompting the closure of a section of Voortrekker Road.

A section of Voortrekker Road in eMalahleni Extension 10 was closed following an incident this morning in which a police officer was shot while responding to a robbery in progress.

Witbank News reports the closure affected the stretch of road between the Christiaan de Wet and Hofmeyer intersections.

According to information received, the police officer was attending to a robbery call at a local filling station on Voortrekker when the incident occurred. A bullet struck the officer. She was rushed to Life Cosmos Hospital.

It is at this stage unclear if anything was stolen.

Forensic teams were on the scene, collecting evidence and working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Residents and motorists were advised to use alternative routes to avoid the area and minimise disruptions to their daily activities.
