One dead, another hospitalised after allegedly drinking poisonous liquor
A man has died and his friend admitted to hospital after allegedly drinking poisonous liquor in Gcilima, near Southbroom, KwaZulu-Natal.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said police have opened an inquest docket after Mncedisi Ndovela (21) died from allegedly drinking poisonous liqour, South Coast Herald reported.
Investigations have revealed Ndovela and the friend mixed up a concoction and drank it, police said.
“Ndovela’s girlfriend told police that when he arrived at her house at about 5pm he was not feeling well and was vomiting,” said Mfeka.
She tried to take him to the clinic, but Ndovela refused, added Mfeka.
Mfeka appealed to public that if anyone was aware of people selling suspicious alcohol, they were urged to contact the police immediately.
In a separate incident, a family in Olievenhoutbosch, north of Johannesburg, was killed after eating poisonous mushrooms, in December last year.
It was alleged the family ate the meal with mushrooms, which had been a regular feature on the household’s dinner menu, on the night of December 5.
It was believed the mother, Johanna Mthethwa, picked them from a patch neighbours said was along the way she walked from work every day.
The four family members, including two learners, a Grade 1 learner from Olivenhoutbosch Primary and a Grade 11 learner at Steve Tshwete Secondary School, allegedly died at different times while receiving intensive treatment at a local hospital.
The mother and father of the learners also died in the tragic incident.
