Parents furious over ‘dodgy’ Noordgesig school circumcisions

The National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) will on Friday convene a meeting with parents and teachers at Noordgesig Primary School after pupils were allegedly assaulted at a circumcision centre in Fleurhof, Roodepoort.

Parents staged a picket outside the school earlier this week demanding answers from the principal after the alleged assaults, Soweto Urban reported.

It is alleged a group of 40 boys went for circumcision on Friday last week. Parents signed consent forms allowing their children to go.

When they signed the consent forms, the parents were under the impression their children were going to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, but they ended up in an RDP house in Fleurhof.

The pupils were picked up from the school on Friday morning and were supposed to return the same day.

There was panic among the parents when their children were not returned by the time it got dark. They were only brought back in the early hours of Saturday morning. Only two out of 40 boys had been circumcised.

A representative from the NASGB urged a group of angry parents who were camping outside the school on Wednesday not to resort to violence. She promised them that Friday’s meeting would produce a solution to the matter.

Dr Lisa Mulenga from the Society for Family Health (SFH), which manages New Start Clinics, urged parents to be extra cautious when sending their children for circumcision.

“It is the responsibility of the parent to verify the legality of the circumcision centre they are sending their children to.

“Parents are also welcome to accompany their children to the clinic when going for circumcision,” added Mulenga.

Mulenga encouraged parents to properly read the consent forms before signing.

“Consent forms should be returned with an ID copy of the parent and affidavit attached. This is done to protect the child and the parent.”
