Parents seek answers in Vaal River drowning inquest
Eight months after a Hoërskool Driehoek teenager tragically lost his life during a private boat trip on the Vaal River, his parents are still awaiting answers in court.
The parents of Thomas Sithole (17) are still searching for answers eight months after the teenager drowned in the Vaal River.
According to Vaalweekblad, Thomas disappeared on January 9 while on a private boat trip with friends. Police recovered his body three days later, on January 12.
The incident caused much speculation and no facts. A post-mortem examination completed in February indicated that no foul play was suspected, but left his parents with many questions.
Searching for truth
Alice and Steve Sithole returned to court on Tuesday (September 29) seeking clarity. The Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court postponed the inquest to October 29 to allow them to secure legal representation to push the case forward.
The upcoming inquest will ensure that all evidence surrounding Thomas’s death is formally presented before a magistrate. Court proceedings will hopefully shed light on the tragedy and bring peace to his grieving parents.
He should have been celebrating his matric farewell with his Hoërskool Driehoek classmates and preparing for his final examinations. He would also have been celebrating his 18th birthday on Wednesday (October 7).
