Pensioner (71) arrested for alleged possession of drugs

Community members of Mhluzi outside Middelburg alerted police about a pensioner who was allegedly in possession of drugs.

Police in Mhluzi, a township near Middelburg, recently acted on information from the community that led to the arrest of a 71 year pensioner.

Police were patrolling in the area at Extention 08 after they received information that drugs were sold at a certain house.

Police visited the house and conducted a search at the premises where they made a discovery of 15 pitches of brownish powder believed to be nyaope.

The suspect was then arrested and the recovered substance was confiscated for further investigation. The suspect is expected to appear at the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has raised a concern regarding elderly people who are expected to give directions to young people in the communities rather than be the ones who are found to be in conflict with the law.

The General however appreciated the members of the community who displayed dedication they provided police with valuable information that assisted.
