The Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court reopened to the public after a bomb scare led to the evacuation of the building and the deployment of the bomb squad this morning.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that an all-clear had been given after the police K-9 unit had successfully swept both floors of the courthouse for any potential threats.

Following the scare, court had been suspended with all occupants evacuated.

Those waiting outside expressed frustration, with some considering leaving while others chose to wait outside the court waiting for any developments.

Church Street and Otto Street were cordoned off by traffic officials, with Msunduzi firefighters on standby.

The all-clear was given shortly after 11:30, and court proceedings resumed.

Roads reopened shortly after.

A bomb scare forced the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court to be evacuated this morning, with traffic police redirecting vehicles on Church Street.

According to a source known to The Witness, the bomb scare may be linked to a corruption case involving the traffic department, currently being heard in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

The bomb squad and K9 Unit are at the scene to investigate and ensure the area is safe.

“Relevant police disciplines including the Explosives Unit officers are at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court following a bomb threat,” says KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

“All inmates have been secured and the building has been evacuated as a precautionary measure. No injuries reported thus far and progress will be reported.”

Authorities are working to determine the credibility of the threat.
