Pietermaritzburg great-grandfather murdered: First suspect arrested

While a suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of an elderly KZN man, police are searching for the other person responsible for his death.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of great-grandfather Rajendra Chetty (72), who was stabbed multiple times as he tried to fight off two intruders who broke into his home almost two weeks ago.

The suspect was arrested on Monday.

The murder, which provoked widespread community outrage, led to the SAPS appointing a task team to investigate. RZS Security also formed part of the team.

Chetty was stabbed multiple times as he tried to fight off two intruders who broke into his home in Ginger Road in Bombay Heights, KZN.

Chetty’s grandson Davelan Saminathan said at the time that a neighbour noticed something was amiss when he saw his grandfather’s door open early in the morning.

He said they immediately rushed to the house.

“Our neighbour called and alerted us. As we rushed out, we saw two men running from my grandfather’s house. Our only concern was to get to my grandfather.

“We found him bleeding from his head, and there was a lot of blood all over. He was breathing but passed on shortly afterwards,” said Saminathan.

The investigation led to a breakthrough, with suspects living in a nearby informal settlement identified.

Following intense surveillance and further investigations, a suspect was positively linked to the murder, resulting in his arrest and the recovery of stolen property.

Police are searching for the other person responsible for his death.
