Police arrest Lydenburg maternity ward cleaner over alleged placenta trafficking
Nomvula Mnisi was arrested for allegedly trying to sell human placentas, believed to have been obtained from the hospital where she works.
A 39-year-old woman is in Lydenburg police custody after allegedly attempting to sell human tissue.
Lowvelder reports that Lydenburg SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Cave Dilebo says the Lydenburg K9 Unit and other officers were patrolling Ext 2 in Mashishing on Wednesday when residents alerted them that Nomvula Rose Mnisi was trying to sell human placentas.
Police were told she was allegedly on her way to Mbombela and intended to hitchhike. Acting on the tip, officers were given a detailed description of Mnisi and soon spotted her walking along Voortrekker Street, carrying a plastic bag. When approached, she admitted it contained human placentas.
Mnisi is believed to work as a general cleaner in the maternity ward at Lydenburg State Hospital, where the tissue is suspected to have been obtained.
She was arrested on a charge of possession of human tissue and briefly appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday. She was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court next Thursday for a formal bail application.
“Police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against her as the investigation continues,” says Dilebo.
