Police officer shot, suspects still at large
A case of attempted murder has been opened after a police officer was shot in his home in Strubens Valley, Roodepoort, in Gauteng early this morning.
Gauteng police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said that at about 2am the officer was shot in his stomach when he exited his house to see what was going on in the yard, Roodepoort Recordreported.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said paramedics received the call for assistance at about 2.20am.
“Upon arrival on the scene, they found the injured man had sustained a critical gunshot wound following the shooting incident,” added Steinmann.
The motive for the attack remains unknown.
The captain was airlifted by the Netcare1 helicopter to Milpark Hospital, where he was receiving urgent medical care, said Steinmann.
Investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, a police officer from the Bolobedu police station, near Tzaneen, in Limpopo was shot dead.
Colonel Ronel Otto said Warrant Officer Godfrey Mantlhake, 44, was gunned down by two men as he was standing next to his car with his girlfriend on Sunday evening.
“[He] was shot three times in the head and chest before the suspects fled,” added Otto.
