Police officers robbed by bogus cops

No arrests have been made after two fake cops tricked police officers into thinking they were colleagues by sounding a police siren before robbing them of firearms and car keys in Boksburg, on the East Rand.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese said the robbers initially attacked a motorist who was driving along Rondebult Road yesterday, Boksburg Advertiser reported.

“The suspects driving in a vehicle described as a charcoal VW Golf equipped with a police siren opened fire on the Ford Fiesta and hit the windscreen and the boot, forcing the motorist to stop his car,” said Ngobese.

“The suspects then confronted the driver and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash and his car keys,” he added.

Ngobese said two Boksburg police officers in private clothes were driving in an unmarked vehicle when they noticed something suspicious was happening and proceeded to the scene.

“However, the wailing of police sirens on the suspects’ vehicle tricked the officers into believing that it was their colleagues who had already responded to the scene. The officers decided to also respond to the scene to act as backup,” he added.

“To their great surprise, the suspects pointed guns at them and robbed them of their belongings before fleeing the scene,” said Ngobese.

He said two 9mm cartridges and two R5 assault rifle magazines were recovered. No arrests have been made.

Police investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident, eight suspects robbed officers of firearms during a robbery at a café in Onderstepoort, Pretoria, in February.

A member of the Pretoria North Community Policing Forum (CPF), along with other police officers, reportedly walked into the café while the robbery was in progress, Rekord Centurion reported.

The suspects then stripped the officers of their firearms and forced them, along with the CPF member, to the back of the shop.

The men reportedly ransacked the shop and made off with alcohol and an undisclosed amount of cash.
