Police probe mysterious deaths of 2 Gauteng teens at Sabie lodge
The St Stithians community has paid tribute to Cameron Waldeck-Cooks and Ethan Coetzee as police continue investigating their deaths.
Tragedy has struck a Sandton school community following the deaths of a 17-year-old learner and a 19-year-old former pupil, whose bodies were discovered at a guest lodge in Sabie on Monday (August 3).
It remains unclear how Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, a Grade 11 learner at St Stithians Girls’ College, and Ethan Coetzee, an alumnus of St Stithians Boys’ College, died, reports the Lowvelder.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the deaths.
“We have opened an inquest docket for investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death,” Masondo said.
St Stithians pays tribute to pupils
Waldeck-Cooks joined the school in 2015 as a Grade R learner.
According to a death notice issued by the school, she was an accomplished sportswoman who excelled in rowing and netball.
The college said she would be remembered for her kindness, warmth and determination.
“She approached life with resilience, quiet strength and a genuine care for those around her.”
Coetzee started at the boys’ college in 2013 as a Grade R learner and completed his matric in 2025.
He was described as a young man of strength, commitment and humility who represented the college’s first team in rugby.
Lodge unavailable for comment
The guest lodge, of which Lowvelder knows the name, could not be reached for comment.
