Polokwane police hunt for mob responsible for man’s death

A man was brutally attacked and killed over the weekend, in what appears to be an act of mob justice.

A manhunt has been launched by Polokwane police for people involved in the murder of a 25-year-old man.

The man’s body was found in Polokwane, in Limpopo, on Saturday afternoon. He appeared to have been assaulted, in what police think to be an act of mob justice.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says a group of students and community members allegedly chased three men. They cornered one, while two managed to escape.

“The group [allegedly] assaulted the victim and left him with serious injuries… He succumbed to his injuries,” he adds.

Ledwaba says the motive for the attack is yet to be determined, although unconfirmed reports suggest that the victim was accused of stealing a cellphone from one of the students.

“At this stage, murder cases have been opened for investigation, but no arrests have been made,” he says.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and urges the public to refrain from unlawful acts, including taking the law into their own hands.

Anyone with information that can assist in the arrest of those responsible can contact investigating officer Sergeant Ringani Rise on 072 170 6535, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or their nearest police station. They can also contact the police via the MySAPS App.
