Powerful earthquake hits Southeast Asia, killing more than 150 people

Scores of people have died, and hundreds are injured or missing after a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand, causing widespread destruction.

At least 153 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck parts of Southeast Asia, including Myanmar and Thailand, earlier today.

An estimated 144 people were killed in Myanmar, AP News reports.

The earthquake, with an epicentre near Mandalay in Myanmar, struck at around midday. It was followed by a strong aftershock.

The United States Geological Survey says the earthquake was of 7.7 magnitude at a depth of 10km, Reuters reports.

In Mandalay, buildings, bridges and roads were destroyed. Aside from the 144 people killed in this country, an estimated 732 were injured.

The publication reports that a US government analysis estimated there could be thousands of deaths, with the Sagaing and Meiktila regions worst impacted.

Unicef said on X it was deeply concerned about the devastating impact of the earthquake on Myanmar’s children and families.

“Our teams are in affected areas to assess impact and prepare humanitarian support.”

According to The Independent, Bangkok in Thailand has been declared a disaster area after a high-rise building under construction collapsed near the Chatuchak Market.

According to reports, at least 117 people were missing in the building.

Nine people have been confirmed dead in the city.
