Prepare for the worst: Serious thunderstorm warning for KZN
Residents are urged to stay informed and prioritise safety as severe storms are expected with heavy rain, damaging winds, and lightning.
Severe storms are forecast with widespread showers and thundershowers expected over KZN this afternoon, following the South African Weather Service’s (SAWS) level 4 warning for torrential rains, damaging winds, and intense lightning.
The warning is in effect from 15:00 to 23:00.
The alert covers various regions in KZN, including Richards Bay, Empangeni, eSikhaleni, Mtunzini, and Ngwelezana, as well as Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Port Shepstone.
Forecasters predict winds reaching up to 100km/h, with gusts up to 120km/h, alongside excessive lightning that could cause power outages and fires.
Large hail may damage crops, vehicles, and infrastructure, while downpours exceeding 40mm may lead to flash flooding.
The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs has placed disaster teams on high alert.
Residents are urged to monitor weather updates, follow evacuation instructions from authorities, avoid travel unless necessary, stay indoors during storms, and avoid windows and exterior walls.
“Heed weather warnings and prioritise your safety,” urged MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi.
“Stay informed through reliable weather updates and emergency alerts. Prepare emergency kits with essential supplies, including food, water, and medication. [Also] charge devices and power banks in case of power outages,” he added.
Potential impacts include flooding of roads, settlements, and low-lying areas; fallen trees blocking major roads; significant traffic disruption, including road closures and flight cancellations; and potential displacement of communities, with possible shortages of food and water.
