Pretoria Comrades champ badly assaulted and stripped of clothes during attack

Nick Bester (60) was training along the Magalies mountain near Amandasig when he was attacked by a group of men who assaulted and robbed him.

60-year-old comrades champion Nick Bester is in ICU after he was attacked while training in the north of Pretoria on Sunday.

His son Shaun said his father was hiking along the Magalies mountain near Amandasig when three men ambushed him, hitting him with a rock from behind.

“They started to hit him and they took his cellphones, bank cards and the gun he had on him,” Shaun said. “They forced him to give them PINs to his bank cards, tied him up, and left him there.”

Shaun said the men also stripped his father of his clothes and left him in his underwear.

The 1991 Comrades champ suffered three broken ribs, a broken cheekbone and multiple cuts all over the body and a gash on his head.

He was rushed to the Eugene Marais hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

It was unclear whether the robbers managed to withdraw any cash from Bester’s bank account.

Police could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
