A Pretoria man was killed in a scooter crash on Steve Biko Drive on Saturday (September 12), just two weeks before he was due to celebrate his 40th birthday, reports Pretoria Rekord.

Jean-Pierre Hanke was declared dead at the scene after the crash at about 08:00 at the intersection of Steve Biko Drive and Naude Street.

Best Care Ambulance Services spokesperson Xander Loubser said paramedics who lived nearby heard the crash and immediately responded.

“The man sustained head injuries and several bone fractures,” Loubser said.

Several lanes were closed for hours while emergency services attended to the crash.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear.

Hanke’s family has remembered him as a kind-hearted and well-mannered man who was loved by everyone who knew him. “He had a gentle nature,” his aunt Rozita Bester, said.

Hanke, who was unmarried and had no children, would have celebrated his 40th birthday on September 26.
